What's Included in Your Tokyo Budget
The calculator covers money you spend once you are in Tokyo: where you sleep, what you eat and drink, trains and the odd taxi, what you do each day, plus a local SIM or eSIM and an optional shopping buffer.
Not included:
- Flights to and from Tokyo
- A visa or an eTA, if your passport needs one
- Travel insurance
- Japan's International Tourist Tax, the departure tax. It is ¥3,000 per person each time you leave Japan by air or sea (opens in a new tab) from 1 July 2026. Airlines usually include it in the ticket. Tickets contracted before 1 July 2026 can still be charged the earlier ¥1,000. Because it sits on the airfare, it is not in this total.
Tokyo also charges an accommodation tax (opens in a new tab) at the hotel: ¥100 per person per night when the room is ¥10,000 to just under ¥15,000 per person, and ¥200 when it is ¥15,000 or more. Rooms under ¥10,000 per person are exempt until 31 March 2027. These round room prices are planning figures, so that small tax is not added on top.
How We Estimate
Each category has three tiers set as a daily or nightly price in Yen: a room per night, food and activities per person, and transport per day. The calculator multiplies each tier by the number of days. Two travellers share one hotel room, while capsules, food, activities and eSIMs are counted for each person. The total is then converted into your currency at the latest indicative ECB reference rate, published via the Frankfurter API.
The area setting changes hotel prices only. Shinjuku and Shibuya is the baseline. Asakusa and Ueno uses 85% of that room price, and Tokyo Station and Ginza uses 120%, then the result is rounded to the nearest ¥1,000. Published 2026 ranges are wide (a business hotel about ¥6,000 to ¥14,000, a mid-range hotel about ¥15,000 to ¥25,000), and east-side listings often start lower than central ones. The spread is for planning, not a census of every hotel. Capsule prices stay the same in every area.
The subway tier uses the official adult price of a 24-hour Tokyo Subway Ticket. That ticket covers Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway. It does not cover JR lines such as the Yamanote, so a day that is mostly JR can cost less on an IC card, which is the lighter tier.
Subway plus taxis keeps that ticket every day and adds two shared daytime rides on each taxi day. The slider sets how many days include the rides, and it starts at every day of the trip. One ride is ¥1,500: the ¥500 flag fall for the first 1 km, then ¥100 every 232 m, which is ¥1,400 for about 3 km, rounded up to ¥1,500 to leave a little for slow traffic. Late-night fares, from 22:00 to 5:00, are 20% higher and are not in this figure.

Where Your Money Goes in Tokyo
For the mid-range 7-day solo plan, the budget splits like this:
- Sleep: about 56% (¥84,000)
- Food and drink: about 28% (¥42,000)
- Getting around: about 5% (¥7,000)
- Activities: about 9% (¥14,000)
- SIM or eSIM: about 2% (¥2,500)
A room is the biggest lever. Each category has three tiers, from simple to comfortable, set as round Yen numbers. Yen is the source of truth: figures in your currency are converted from it with the latest indicative ECB reference rate.
Rooms cost more at a few times of year. In Tokyo, cherry blossom season runs from late March to early April. Golden Week, from late April to early May, and the New Year holidays, from late December to early January, are busy travel periods, and hotel prices are often higher then. The Japan National Tourism Organization says rooms fill up quickly in cherry blossom season, and that transport and hotels cost more over Golden Week and New Year.

Your bank, card or currency exchange will usually give you a little less than the reference rate, so treat these as a baseline. Every other currency has a Yen page too:
Cash or Card in Tokyo
An IC card such as Suica or Pasmo covers trains, many buses, convenience stores and a lot of vending machines. Larger restaurants, hotels and shops usually take cards. Some smaller restaurants, market stalls and shrine boxes still expect cash. Tipping is not expected in Japan.
Carry enough Yen for a day or two of small costs and top up the card as you go. Simple meals plus a light day of trains in this model come to about ¥3,300 (about $21).
If a card machine offers to charge you in your home currency instead of Yen, choosing Yen usually avoids a worse conversion rate set by the machine's operator. Your bank's own fees still apply.
Keep a backup card stored separately and a little emergency cash on top of your budget, in case a card is blocked or lost.

How much money do I need for a week in Tokyo?
On the mid-range settings, one week is about ¥149,500 (about $950) for one person. That is spending while you are in Tokyo only.
Are flights, visas or the departure tax included in the estimated budget?
No. The total is spending while you are in Tokyo. Flights, a visa or an eTA, and travel insurance are left out. Japan charges an International Tourist Tax when you leave, and airlines usually include it in the ticket, so it is not added here either.

How much cash should I carry in Tokyo?
Trains, convenience stores and many restaurants take an IC card or a credit card. Keep some Yen for smaller shops, lockers and shrine offerings. As a guide from this model, simple meals and a light day of trains come to about ¥3,300 (about $21).
